In Kingsville, Texas, in 1926, a boy runs through the outer yards leading to the roundhouse of his town's railroad center. He means only to get home fast so his mother won't be angry with him. By accident he witnesses a brutal murder and quickly runs to tell his father, setting off a series of events that change his whole family's life.
The 1920's were not only the merry postwar years that signaled freedom for women when they finally attained the vote, but the upsurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, big oil, and the importance of railroads in moving produce and merchandize around the country and to and from all the coasts.
In 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, the boy works in the same rail yards, and one day takes refuge from a tornado by climbing, with a railroad detective, into the firebox of the locomotive he has been working on.
There he tells the detective what he had seen years before in the railyards. The two work together to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The author uses her own family history to tell the tale of a pivotal event in the life of her grandfather. She's done her research as well: the locations and characters are consistent with life in Depression-era Texas. It's true what they say - sometimes the truth is even stranger than fiction - which makes this tale all the more interesting. But this is a fun story to read, not a history lesson. One of the most entertaining chapters tells about an attempt to hold a picnic at the local cemetery by the Ku Klux Klan (because the principal of the local high school courageously won't let them hold it on the football green). Shenanigans ensue!

Out of the Firebox edition by Judith Stephens Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Not really a railroad story but definitely a good read. I grew up with folks just like this. You probably did too.
Based on a true event in her family’s past, Stephens explores the devastating effects of a casual but brutal murder upon her father’s family. In doing so, she give a sense of the total feel of a small Texas town in the 1920’s. Despite the bleakness of actual events, Stephens displays a wonderful sense of the comic and absurd along with perfect pitch for dialogue. Some of the scenes are marvelously funny, while others tear at your heart.
Out of the Firebox was so engrossing, I simply could not put it down once I started reading it. Characters almost leaped off the page because Ms. Stephens described them so well.
I only heard about the Great Depression but its actual living conditions were so well described by Ms. Stephens, I felt as though I had actually lived then; and at times I could (almost) taste the dust of Texas as well as the food.
Ms. Stephens not only keeps events moving but does it in a very natural way...there are no discernible jumps from one part of the whole book to another. Plus the author pulls all the elements of the books story line together at the end in a very satisfying way!
Be prepared to be totally engrossed once you start reading.
Ms. Stephens, you have made a follower of your writing with me and I cannot wait to read more of your books!
This storyteller has a real, true gift, one rarely found in the written word. Coming from a bloodline of master storytellers, I know one when I read one. I hated that this book ended. Having been in love with good reads my entire life, many decades now, I have zero patience with poor or mediocre writing. I give this a 10; most greats of mine get an 8. Ms. Stephens, this is excellent. I fell for the characters right away, and that just doesn't happen often. I want more!
This is a brilliant description of life in Texas during the Depression as seen by a young teenage boy. He is living a life of
poverty and hard work, and this never stops him from trying to find out who killed his father and whether the killer can be
brought to justice. The language of the people in this young adult/crossover to adult book sounds like the front porches of
Texas during the dustbowl and Depression. This is the world before the Second World War, and the story displays a lot of
the determination and courage that helped win that war. The boy wins our heart and demonstrates the sort of grit that Americans are proud of. We follow his journey to young manhood with interest and pleasure.
I would recommend this book to teens and adults interested in Texas, the Depression, and coming of age stories set
against the backdrop of small town life in the nineteen- thirties in the United States.
